THE CHARACTERS

We've brought together a group of 14 models to represent over 20 notable personalities as well as the everyday woman. 

THE EXPLORER
CHARLOTTE SMALL

Born to an Irish father and Cree mother, Charlotte Small was raised in the Woodland Cree tradition. At the age of 13 she married David Thompson the acclaimed geographer. Together they travelled over 20,000 kilometres by horseback, canoe and on foot.

THE ENTREPRENEUR
NELLIE CASHMAN

In 1874 Nellie Cashman embarked on a great adventure as the lone woman in a party of men travelling to Cassiar in search of gold. She never looked back. Nellie operated boarding houses, grocery stores and restaurants to fund her first love - mining for gold.

THE ADVENTURER
ALOHA WANDERWELL

At the age of 16 Idris Galcia Hall responded to an ad in the Paris Herald - "Brains, Beauty & Breeches - World Tour Offer for Lucky Young Woman....". idris jumped at the chance! She changed her name to Aloha Wanderwell and began a journey that covered 380,000 miles across 80 countries.

THE POLITICIAN
NANCY HODGES

Journalist, politician and tireless women's rights advocate. Nancy's political life began in 1941 and cumulated in 1953 when she was appointed to the Senate. Throughout her career she used her voice as both a journalist and politician to further the cause of women.

THE FASHIONS

Every nuance of Canadian fashion history has been researched to truly understand what women were wearing over the past 150 years. The fashions are based on extant pieces, fashion plates, photographs, personal diaries and newspaper accounts. Attention has been paid to every detail including fashion trends, fabric, embellishment, accessories and the appropriate undergarments required to create a certain silhouette.

THE DESIGNER
ROBIN ROBARTS

Robin Robarts is a fashion historian, costume designer, expert seamstress and the principal of Robin Robarts Costumes.

 

THE MUSICIANS

Lauren and Jim Stubbs are co-founders of the West Coast Chamber Players.  Jim Stubbs has arranged the music for the event - everything from Dvorak to Joplin to Gershwin to Glen Miller and more.

THE BASSOONIST
LAUREN STUBBS

Lauren Stubbs has had a long and distinguished career performing in New York as Principal Bassoonist with many notable orchestras and dance companies. She was Principal Bassoonist with the National Ballet of Canada for several years and has performed frequently with the Metropolitan Opera and New York Philharmonic. Lauren received her Music Degrees from the Julliard School.

THE TRUMPETER
JIM STUBBS

Jim Stubbs was principal trumpet with American Ballet Theatre and various other notable American Ballet companies, Orchestras and Philharmonics. He was an associate member of the Metropolitan Opera for 25 years. He has appeared as soloist on PBS with Jessye Norman and Kiri Te Kanawa. Jim holds a Master's Degree from the Manhatten School of Music.
